02  Food Delivery Cost Optimization

Specific Challenges pre-Google Solution :

There were challenges finding routes for delivery efficiently. This was previously done manually which is very time-consuming. The company was unsure if their current system led to optimal routes. The company wanted to find the optimal route in terms of cost per box.

Actions :

We educated the customer on GCP capabilities, ML concepts, ML feature engineering and incorporating key metrics associated per delivery. Oceans Technologies used a recommendation engine which suggests the route that can deliver new orders based on their prediction call to the ML model. The cost optimizer module outputs the cheapest of all the recommended routes for the customer.

GCP Components Used: App Engine, Compute Engine, Google Cloud Storage, BigQuery, Cloud ML Engine.

Customer Acknowledgement of the Work Done:

Leaders from Food Company were pleased with the results of the proof of concept and will use the ML model every day to make delivery decisions. They see a lot of potential in the route recommendation model.

They understand the efforts required to do feature engineering and will work towards that. Data captured will be their key focus so that the model will be effective as they evolve to leverage machine learning as per the recommendation documentation that We have shared with the customer.

01  Oceans Technologies Powers Volusion Swift, Self-Service to Google Cloud Platform


As a large and rapidly growing eCommerce platform, Volusion recognized that they needed to move their data center to the cloud if they wanted to lower operational overhead and stay apace with the market. Volusion chose Google Cloud Platform as their cloud provider.

Google subsequently recommended that Volusion use its automated GCP VM Migration Service, powered by us Live Migration, to perform this complex large-scale migration of more than 700 servers.

After a successful POC with Oceans Technologies, Volusion launched a seamless self-service migration within three months, with minimal assistance required from us. Due to the simplicity and reliability of our functionality, all deadlines were met and Volusion decided to migrate additional servers that were originally out of scope.

The Challenge :

Volusion had an aggressive goal: to completely move all 700+ servers to GCP within three months. Their workloads consisted of Windows servers, web servers, and databases, hosting more than 35,000 customer websites. One of the primary goals of this major migration project was to reduce overhead costs by decreasing the number of Windows licenses needed. In addition to the sheer scale of the project, another challenge that Volusion faced was the careful handling of legacy applications, databases, and other configurations — since these had not been updated for years, it was important to ensure that nothing broke or was left behind during the live migration.

The original plan was to use an internal tool for this migration, which had only been utilized thus far for on-premises migrations. However, when the team attempted to deploy it for migration to the cloud, they immediately ran into timeouts and performance/compatibility issues and determined that project deadlines could not be met using this approach. According to Uriah Langley, Windows System Engineer at Volusion, “the team quickly recognized that the internal tool was too slow and it was not going to be feasible to use it for our entire migration. We realized that we were at risk of missing our migration project deadline.”

The Solution :

At this point, the Systems team turned to Google for a recommendation. Google recommended CloudEndure Live Migration, which is integrated into the GCP VM Migration Service and available natively within the Google Cloud Platform Console. This service offers automated, application-agnostic migration with near-zero cutover windows and no system disruption during replication — and is provided at no cost to GCP clients.

The POC with Oceans Technologies was concluded in a week. In parallel with testing Oceans Technologies Live Migration, the Volusion Systems team also attempted to get their internal tool operational. “We were initially only going to move only the largest customers with the Oceans Technologies tool,” said Tim Krajewski, Volusion Systems Engineer, “but as the internal tool became slower and more problematic, it became a leadership decision to use Oceans Technologies for the entire migration.”

The Results :

The VM migration project was completed within the target deadline, without data loss or disruption. Following the migration project, Volusion could shut down the on-premises machines, and immediately realize cost savings on both hardware and software licenses.

The Volusion experts worked with our support team at the beginning of the project to determine how they wanted their machines to operate once they were spun up. “Not only did the software work, but your support team was also very actively engaged,” said Langley. Once the staging area was prepared and configured in the target region, automatic replication with the Oceans Technologies Live Migration tool “was simple enough that we could set up 60 servers at a time and have them all run through in parallel; we knew exactly what they were going to do… and it was easy to schedule using the UI,” explained Krajewski.

As a result of Volusion’s success with our, Volusion decided to migrate an additional 50+ large stats servers, each holding a terabyte or more, using the CloudEndure/GCP VM Migration Service. As Langley explained, “Oceans Technologies just works, it does what it’s supposed to do, and it’s reliable.”

02  AWS Migration


Aiming to eliminate the time that its IT staff spent maintaining on-site infrastructure, Clark Construction wanted to migrate its applications and data to the cloud. Using Our Live Migration, the company moved everything to AWS without a hitch. The migration lasted less than a week and went so smoothly that the employees outside of the IT department never knew the company’s servers had migrated.

The Challenge :

Clark Construction set a goal to shift the applications and data from its 50 servers running in its data center to AWS by the end of the year. With limited staff, the company’s IT department wanted to spend more time on business operations and less time operating a data center and hardware facilities. Bob Gelety, the Director of Network Engineering at Clark Construction, and his staff chose AWS because of its reputation, but immediately realized the native migration tools AWS had provided to migrate the data and applications running on VMware architecture would not meet their time constraints.

After three migration tests with AWS native tools, it was obvious they needed a different solution. Clark Construction had a small window in which to migrate: downtime was limited to an 8-hour period — once every other month. Using AWS native tools, it would have taken days of downtime for Gelety and his two network administrators to migrate a terabyte of file-sharing applications and data into AWS, a luxury they didn’t have. Gelety was also faced with another hurdle: having six Oracle-based financial legacy workloads, which their vendor claimed could not be migrated to the cloud without being rebuilt.

The Solution :

AWS recommended Oceans Technologies to Gelety’s team. Clark Construction wanted its migration to be handled by a proven enterprise-grade solution that could be deployed quickly, affordable, and without system disruption. Within a few hours of testing, Gelety and his staff had successfully migrated a couple of servers and immediately recognized that they could migrate all of their servers without complication or the limitations experienced with the cloud provider’s native tools — and with the speed that was needed to accommodate the 8-hour downtime window.

Our support staff worked closely with Clark Construction IT staff, constantly checking the data’s continuous replication status before the planned cutover.
